Questions & Answers

Everything you're
wondering about NatureKin.

We know choosing an enrichment program for your child is a big decision. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most — and if yours isn't here, reach out at hello@naturekin.net.

Safety & Supervision

We maintain a 7:1 child to guide ratio to ensure every child is known, seen, and supported throughout the day.

We will administer basic first aid immediately. If necessary, we will contact your emergency contact and call emergency personnel. Our guides are CPR and First Aid certified and a first aid kit is always on site.

Yes. All NatureKin guides are CPR and First Aid certified.

For any and all emergencies, we will notify all participants and their emergency contacts as soon as possible. We always have emergency contact information on hand for every child.

Always. While we give children the freedom to explore, guides are always positioned so they can see and hear every child. Freedom within safe boundaries is at the heart of what we do.

A basic first aid kit is always available on site. Any allergies must be reported at enrollment and necessary medications should be carried with your child at all times. Please make sure we are fully informed so we can best support your child.

NatureKin is an outdoor program in Texas — insects and wildlife are part of the experience and part of the learning. We actively teach children safety principles around how to observe and interact with nature respectfully and safely. This is one of the things we love most about being outside.

We ask that you apply sunscreen and bug spray before arriving and bring your own for reapplication. We will have backup supplies on hand just in case.

Weather & Logistics

Light rain? We're still out there — bring appropriate rain gear and embrace it. In the event of a thunderstorm or severe weather, we will call the session and notify all families as soon as possible.

Yes — Circle C Park has plenty of natural shade as well as a brick shelter on site.

Comfortable clothes and shoes that can get dirty — because they will. For cooler weather, dress in layers with boots, gloves, and a hat. If in doubt, overdress and peel layers off.

Bring an appropriately sized backpack, a water bottle, a snack, and a lunch. Lunch is also available for purchase on site for $15 if you'd prefer not to pack one.

Yes, there are several parking spots available at Circle C Park.

Programming begins at 8:00 AM and runs until 12:00 PM. As this is not a drop-off program, parents are expected to remain on site for the duration of the session.

The Program

Parents remain on site. NatureKin is a community — not just a program. You're welcome to work quietly, participate alongside your child, or simply be present. However you want to show up, there's a place for you here.

We welcome children ages 5–12, divided into two groups — ages 5 to 8 and ages 9 to 12 — for focused learning activities. The groups come together as a full community for opening circle, snack, and closing lunch. Mixed-age time is intentional — older children naturally mentor younger ones, and younger children inspire curiosity in older ones.

We open together as a full community at 8:00 AM, then branch into age groups for guided learning anchored in that day's theme — Nature & Science on Mondays, Adventure & Movement on Tuesdays, and Creativity & Real-World Skills on Wednesdays. We break for snack and free exploration, then move into service project work and skill-building before coming back together for lunch and a closing reflection at noon.

NatureKin lives intentionally between structure and freedom. Each day has a clear rhythm and learning purpose, but children have plenty of space to follow their curiosity, ask their own questions, and pursue self-directed discovery within that framework. Think of it as a guided adventure — not a classroom.

Neither — and both. We have a carefully designed seasonal learning arc with real themes, skills, and outcomes. But children aren't sitting at desks. They're building, exploring, experimenting, and creating. The learning is real and intentional — it just doesn't look like school.

Each season builds toward a community service project that the children design and lead themselves. Guides don't assign it — they facilitate the conversation. Children identify something they care about in their community or environment and work together to do something meaningful about it. Past inspiration includes habitat restoration, community gardens, and conservation awareness campaigns.

With patience, observation, and care. Our guides are trained to read children — to know when to step in, when to give space, and when to create an opportunity for connection. Mixed-age community naturally supports children who struggle socially because there is always a role for every child.

We welcome children of all learning styles — in fact, NatureKin was designed with them in mind. Hands-on, nature-based learning is often the environment where children who struggle in traditional settings thrive the most. Please reach out before enrolling so we can ensure we're the right fit and set your child up for success.

Yes — 15% off for a second child and 25% off for a third. Because community starts at home.

Philosophy

NatureKin isn't enrichment for its own sake. It's a carefully designed educational experience rooted in nature, stewardship, and real-world capability. Children don't just fill time here — they build something, contribute something, and leave each season having done something that matters.

NatureKin is secular, though we honor and respect all faiths and spiritual traditions. All families are welcome here.

NatureKin provides the hands-on, community-based, nature-immersed learning that's hardest to replicate at home — mixed-age collaboration, outdoor skills, service projects, and peer mentorship. Each session also includes movement games, hiking, and physical challenges that many homeschool families count toward P.E. requirements. Many of our families are homeschool or hybrid-school families for exactly these reasons.

By the end of a NatureKin season your child will have contributed to a real community service project that they helped design and lead. They will have built real practical skills — fire-making, gardening, navigation, cooking, and building. They will have developed genuine ecological literacy — knowing how ecosystems work, why they matter, and what they can do to protect them. They will have grown in confidence not because someone told them they were great, but because they did hard things and succeeded. And they will have found their place in a community of children and families who share the same values.

This isn't a program you pay for to keep your child busy. It's an investment in who they are becoming.
